Feeling nervous about booking your first personal training session? Completely normal — and completely unnecessary. At Complx Health, your first personal training session in South Melbourne is about understanding you, not judging you. Here’s exactly what happens, so you can walk in relaxed.
1. A conversation about your goals
We start by talking — what you want to achieve, your training history, any injuries or health considerations, and how your week actually looks. Whether your goal is fat loss, strength, injury recovery or simply feeling better, everything is built around it. There’s no judgement about your starting point; most of our clients began exactly where you are.
2. A movement and history assessment
Before writing a single set or rep, your trainer assesses how you move — posture, mobility, and any restrictions or old injuries. This is what separates real personal training from a generic workout: your program is built on your actual body, not assumptions.
3. Your first training session
You’ll then move through a coached session at your level — learning proper technique on foundational movements. Expect to be guided closely, not thrown in the deep end. You’ll leave knowing you’ve worked, but not broken.
4. Your plan and next steps
Finally, your trainer maps out how your program will progress and how often to train for your goal (most clients train 2–3 times a week). If any injury or pain comes up, we coordinate with our on-site physiotherapist and myotherapist so nothing gets in the way of your progress.
On frequency, it’s worth setting expectations honestly: most people need fewer coached sessions than they assume, and the number should reduce as you improve. A common structure is two sessions a week while technique is built, then one, then periodic reviews once you’re training independently. How many sessions you actually need goes through this by situation.
What to bring
- Comfortable training clothes and supportive shoes
- A water bottle and a towel
- Any relevant injury or medical information
- An open mind — that’s the most important part
Is personal training the right format for you?
Not everyone needs one-on-one coaching, and we’d rather you started with the right thing. Personal training suits you if you need technique built, are working around an injury, or won’t train reliably without an appointment. If your blocker is consistency rather than knowledge, group sessions may serve you better. PT vs group classes vs training alone helps you diagnose which one you actually need.
If something currently hurts, start there instead. An assessment with our physiotherapist takes an hour and means your training is built around a known problem rather than working blindly around it.
